There are so many reasons why you should find a designer you trust to work with you on your branding, but the two most important reasons are that you do really get what you pay for and you do really need someone to work with not just to work for you.
Branding On A Budget
There are a lot of sites out there where you can pick up a logo for under £5. Little Bulldog isn't one of them I'm afraid. It isn't possible to do industry and competitor research, brainstorming, sketches, mood boards, colour palettes, type studies, illustration, pattern designing and practical application for £5. What is it possible to do for £5? I'm not sure, but probably something along the lines of selling the same generic logo to lots of different people regardless of their industry or product. Probably a logo that has been created from stock elements that are being used by another endless number of people for other things. If that's what you're looking for then go for it. Bargain!
Sadly, if you do come across something amazing and original for £5/£10/£50 then have a quick think about how much that designer is actually being paid. After you factor in computer, software, wifi, electricity costs, taxes, unpaid sick days not to mention their actual time and skill, it can't come close to the minimum wage. But then again, it's their decision to value their work so low. Maybe they're a student building up their portfolio in which case their creativity and motivation will be high, but their practical experience will just be on the rise. Everyone has to start somewhere so with the fees so low it might be worth taking the chance.
If you are looking to create a personality for your business, a real personality that people will relate to and become loyal to, then you need to look a bit further than a stock logo site or a student. And you'll need to spend a bit more than £5. It doesn't have to be a fortune, but it is an investment in your company. Just as you may need a physical space to sell from or a well-tuned website, you need a voice and a face. Something that makes you stand out from the crowd and then welcomes the crowd in. You need a professional brand, a balanced kit of parts - logo, colour, typography, imagery, illustration, tone of voice - to speak with, not just a generic logo to plonk on things. You need something created from scratch just for your business. You need discussions, research, idea generation, more discussions, development, more discussions, more development! You need to see that final brand and think, oh wow yes that is us! Not, well it'll do. Invest a bit more and it will pay off, your special brand will find your perfect customers and make you feel more confident about your product or service.
Working As A Team
Another very important reason why you should work with a professional designer is that it is near on impossible to create your own brand, even for a professional designer. You are too close, you need to find someone you trust with experience in branding who can get to know you and your product but not be emotionally invested. Branding is very subjective, particularly the visual aspects. Unless you are going to be your own customer, you need to step away from judging the branding through your own eyes. You might really really love bright pink and squiggly fonts but they might really really not be the right way to go for your product.
Your designer needs to understand that you are the master of your product and you need to understand that your designer has a lot of experience and knowledge of branding. They can help you avoid fonts that will date quickly or avoid overloading a logo with icons of every aspect of your business. They can help you step away and look through your potential customers eyes.
A logo is just a logo, it's a bit like a name tag. A brand is a personality, a voice that will appeal to your customers and capture their attention. A personality that will grow with your business and survive even if the logo may need changing. A professional designer can help you find that voice and build it into something really special.
And, for the most part, a professional designer will be there for you. In the long run. When things need updating, expanding, refreshing. At Little Bulldog, we love building working relationships and see the brands grow. It's a bit sad saying goodbye to our work and never seeing how it grows. We believe in something for every budget (within reason!), so please get in touch below and we'll see what we can build together. We offer a FREE initial consultation and estimate.
